Here's a quickie for Friday.

This past weekend was Chicago Comic Con put on by Wizard World. As usual, I whored myself out for commissions in exchange for scratch.

Most of the time I do customized art for fans that I draw myself. Every now and then (not too often, which is surprising considering my career was built on inking) I'll get asked to ink over pencil art that was already sketched out by another artist.

Below, you'll find before-and-afters of pieces by Frank Quitely and J. Scott Campbell, both of whom I have never inked before:

With J. Scott Campbell, I feel the trick is to try and capture the smooth, yet loose strokes in his linework. One can do this by keeping your arm loose; draw with the shoulder/elbow, and keep the wrist still. Don't worry too much about staying exactly on the line, because that's when you will stiffen up and be intimidated about being "precise," thus making your lines sloppy.

For Frank's cover piece, you can see that the detail is very small, so for those lines I used the 005 size Micron pen.
